Cultural Gadfly is a running dialogue on politics, religion, and society at large. The gadfly has grown to hold a unique status in the history of Western Civilization. Elevated by a consequential metaphor of Socrates’, it has grown to be symbolic of that which keeps reason and calm in the midst of emotion and excitement, that which warns when warning is needed, that which advocates the proper course in the face of the the rampaging forces of chaos and the tyrannical pressure of progressive change. It has been a defender of culture, society, morals, rational discussion, the arts; the list could go on. Suffice it to say that the gadfly is indubitably good, inevitably necessary, and inscrutably small (at least in comparison with the animal it bites). We are, all of us, gadflies.
